He stood out for their D-League team instead of being passed over again. He played on the 2013-14 season as well for a second year back for the 2014-15 season. Then he really stepped up. Simmons, the undrafted , overlooked, the guy who had to pay a minor league team to even watch him play, is now getting paid to play in the NBA, and not just for any team, for the San Antonio Spurs one of the couple teams in the NBA that could win the championship this season.

Rookie Johnathan Simmons is averaging 14.3 minutes a game as the Spurs have a 60 win title contending team on their hands. Simmons attended two junior colleges. The University of Houston for one season and then tried out the American Basketball League before that folded for him. He then went on to play for the D-League for the San Antonio Spurs team the Austin Toros. Simmons left his Houston home and drove 175 miles to San Antonio to play for their D League team in hopes because it was looking like there was nothing left for him.
